The 2nd in the series of GUIDES to highlight market trends for sustainable refrigerants, the "GUIDE 2013: Natural Refrigerants" exclusively focuses on North America, including the USA, Canada and Mexico. The publication features a CO2 supermarket map, highlights trends in light-commercial applications, and analyses results from 550+ respondents about: level of familiarity with natural refrigerants (CO2, NH3, HC, H2O, air), use of natural refrigerant (NR) products today and tomorrow; purchasing criteria for HVAC&R equipment and matching of NR products; NR strengths & weaknesses; willingness to pay for NR equipment; etc.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), together with market development expert shecco, has launched a survey on the availability, benefits and challenges of natural refrigerants and HFC-free foams in developing countries. The survey intends to collect input from developing countries faced with the search for alternatives under their HCFC phase-out management plans. UNIDO and shecco invite industry, end-users, associations, policy makers, NGOs, researchers and other involved parties to take the survey, and warmly welcomes responses from Africa, Asia, Caribbean/Central America, Middle East and South America. Input from survey results, as well as the jointly organised Technology Summit, taking place on 3 & 4 June 2013 will be captured in a final report to be launched in August / September time. The report will be freely accessible to all interested stakeholders around the world.

To launch a 2nd edition of the successful GUIDE Europe, the survey collects input from industry experts and end-users with operations in Europe (50+ countries) that have an interest in the market development of natural refrigerants (NR) and fluorinated gases. This includes all those that are using or providing NR solutions, but also those not (yet) active in NR solutions. The survey enquires about the current and future use of carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrocarbons, water and air as refrigerants in mobile and stationary applications. It will collect input to evaluate the economic importance of NR in today's HVAC&R industry and among commercial/industrial end-users, as well as shed light on market projections until 2020. A special focus is put on the business case for NR, the training and the policy situation.

The publication highlights legislative, safety, technology, efficiency and cost aspects for NH3/CO2 refrigerant secondary systems for industrial refrigeration. It is addressed to industrial end-users looking for guidance on selecting technology solutions that provide investment security at high efficiency and safety levels, by providing an overview of secondary refrigeration systems and natural refrigerants, introducing the reader to the overall layout and specification of components, as well as outlining in a best-practice guide how to respect safety rules for ammonia and carbon dioxide. Various case studies have been added to highlight successful applications.
